The venue proposed by the client, a chapel adjacent to the business premises,  was dingy with a low ceiling. I did a quick recconaissance and discovered a leafy setting across the road. Better still, there was a stone bench seat with a reasonably green background. The seat was a find as it is a defensive prop. What do I mean by defensive prop? A seat gives a sitter something to shield them from the photographer when they stand behind it. This means they feel more comfortable and so relaxed portraiture ensues.

I also wanted a more neutral background to give the client flexibility when designing brochures. Adjacent to the business premises was a quasi courtyard with a neutral wall. To turn it into a studio, I asked one of the funerals arrangers to bring a chair with arms.

I photographed the funeral arrangers in the leafy setting first as the light in the courtyard at that time was harsh. 3/4 hour later, it was perfect.
